Sightsavers Journey to Freeing People from the Bondage of Disability

Sightsavers is a UK charity organization championing for the rights of the people with disability, preventing avoidable blindness and supporting visually impaired people across the world. They have worked across Africa and Asia distributing treatments and fighting for rights of the disabled. Well, they have also extended their loving hands to deworm people, especially children.

Recently, they have initiated programs for preventing and treating neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). More specifically, Sightsavers are advocating for funding and monitoring deworming programs. They started the programs in the year 2011 as part of integrated neglected tropical disease programs. They decided to prioritize the NTDs programs because of the likelihood of bettering people’s lives at a low cost.

Some surveys have indicated that the Sightsavers’ deworming programs did reach a large percentage of the targeted children and that the deworming program is very cost-effective. However, they admit that it is difficult to estimate exactly the impact or rather the success of the programs. The charity organization estimate that each child is dewormed at a cost of $1.19 and in a year, the Sightsavers activities could face financial constraints. The Sightsavers’ deworming programs have been rated among the most important charitable works they have ever initiated and therefore, it offers well-wishers an opportunity to do good by donating.

According to Sightsavers, they still have deworming programs that it could fund in the year 2018/2019 with additional financing of about around $6.4 million. There are limited chances that they could fund the programs from other sources. It could be the best idea for them to seek more funding so that they could extend the deworming programs to 2022.

If you visit Sightsavers’ Facebook profile, the content is breath-taking. They have published many videos, one of them is entitled “A Million Miracles”. The charity organization organized a fund drive in the year 2014 to fund more than one million cataract operations. In four years, they had raised $32 million. They freed hundreds of thousands of people from blindness and given them a new start. Indeed, that is nothing short of a miracle.

Summing up, Sightsavers has endeavored to take the route that is rarely passed. Since 1950, the year it was founded, it has made huge strides towards making the lives of visually impaired people and people living with disabilities worth living. They have brought light to people affected by trachoma, riverside blindness, cataract, among many other conditions. Indeed, the journey they chose to travel is worthwhile.
