In an interview that Alex Pall, one half of the music duo known as The Chainsmokers, gave to Interview Magazine in the summer of 2016, he talked about his early years as a DJ in the New York City area, revealing that he started out just doing it as a hobby, then later managed to make a career out of it, although it was just a small one at first. After DJing around his hometown for a while, he met college student Andrew Taggart, who became the other half of the duo, and was one of the writers who helped pen one of their biggest hits called Closer, which stayed at the number one spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 for many weeks and was getting more than 5 million daily streams by fans all over the world.
With the song Closer, for which the band won a Grammy, Alex Pall said that this was the first time that the group both sang on a record and produced it, something he feels is uncommon in today’s music industry. He said that working with the singer Halsey on this song was incredible because of her strong voice and her unique and cool style, which he says she seemed to be unapologetically proud about. When asked what type of people he feels connect with his music the most, he said that he thinks it’s those who are in the 16 to 25 year-old age range, but that the group also has listeners who are 30 and over. The Chainsmokers have also worked on other music artists’ songs as singers and producers, and although they are considered to be in the EDM genre, Alex Pall says that the types of genres the group loves is indie-alternative and hip hop.
When discussing the band’s financial success, Alex Pall said that they were not the type of guys who were into buying expensive cars, but he did buy a home in the Hollywood Hills that he allowed Peti Lau, known for her AristoFreak style, to decorate. He feels that the part-aristocratic, part bohemian decor fits his personality quite well.
